What qualifications does a truck driver need?

Truck accidents can happen for many reasons and sometimes inadequate training is a factor.

Before truck drivers get their Commercial Driver’s License, they have to provide several types of documentation. According to the Georgia Department of Driver Services, people need to have a valid driver’s license when they apply for their CDL license. They may also need to provide a medical card certifying that they are in good health and physically able to drive a truck. Additionally, people usually need to be at least 18 years old. However, truckers cannot drive across state lines if they are younger than 21.

Basic requirements

Truckers need to pass several tests. They typically need to take an eye exam and a road skills test that examines their driving ability. They also need to pass several written exams that test a driver’s knowledge of road signs and safe driving practices. Truckers cannot receive their CDL until they successfully pass these tests.

Specific requirements

Truck drivers need to pass additional tests if they want to drive more specialized vehicles. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, truck drivers have to pass a knowledge test if they want to haul more than one trailer. They also cannot haul hazardous materials unless they pass a test. Additionally, truck drivers may have restrictions on their CDL based on their situation. Truckers cannot drive vehicles with a manual transmission if they have not received training on these vehicles. If truckers do not have sufficient knowledge of air brake systems, they cannot drive a rig with this kind of braking system.

Even if truck drivers meet all the basic requirements for their CDL license, they may lack the specialized training required to drive certain vehicles. If truckers do not have enough training, they may cause a crash.
